Minister Sylvia Singleton Harris

Minister Sylvia Singleton Harris is a native of Newport News, Virginia.  She is the daughter of the late Deacon & Mrs. Dennis Singleton, Sr.  She is married to the Reverend Ivan Theodore Harris and the mother of three daughters - Iva, Iris, and Ingrid - and one son - Ivan II.

Minister Harris was previously employed by the Hampton City Schools for 39 years, retiring in 2011.  In her last position in the school system, she was the Dean of Girls (Administration) at Kecoughtan High School.  Her formal education includes a bachelor's degree from Norfolk State University, a Master's Degree from Hampton University, and a certificate from the  Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Class of 2002, at Virginia Commonwealth University.  She has done further study at Old Dominion University.  In addition, she has taken various courses under the following:  Tidewater Baptist Association; Baptist General Convention - Continuing Education Credits - Evans Smith Institute - Virginia Union University; Christian Education Congress - National Baptist Convention; and the Leadership Conference sponsored by the Baptist General Convention.

Minister Harris is a member of First Baptist Church Denbigh, serving on the Deaconess Ministry as a spiritual advisor, Mission Ministry, Evangelism Instructor, the teacher for the New Member's Ministry and Wednesday Noonday and Night Bible Study, and director of the Diamonds and Pearls and Boys to Men Mentoring Program for young ladies and men.  She has also served as Workshop Facilitator - Tidewater Association (3 years) and Women's Retreat Facilitator in Virginia, South and North Carolina, Florida, New Jersey, New York, and Tennessee. She holds membership in the Tidewater and National Baptist Conventions as well as the Baptist General Convention of Virginia (BGC).  Other affiliations include:  YMCA, NAACP, Education Associations (NEA, VEA, and HEA), and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA).  Before joining First Baptist Denbigh, she served as a Youth Choir Leader, Children's Church Director, Deaconess, and Vacation Bible School Director.

Minister Harris was licensed to the Gospel Ministry in June of 1995.  Her motto is:  If I can help somebody as I pass along this way, then my living shall not be in vain.  One of her favorite scriptures is Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth  me."
