Strength in Our Shared Differences

At First Baptist Church Denbigh, diversity is more than something we celebrate; it is part of our foundation. We believe the church reflects God’s design when people of different ages, cultures, and backgrounds gather together as one. Every voice and gift strengthens our fellowship, creating a community where belonging is real and every person matters.

Across generations, we worship, learn, and serve, discovering how our differences draw us closer to Christ and to each other. This is not just inclusion, it is family. Together, we build a church where each story adds to the whole, shaping a people united by faith, alive in love, and rooted in hope.

Our Story

Our journey began in 1862 with a small group of baptized believers determined to live out their faith in Denbigh. Through resilience and prayer, we became the first organized Black Baptist church in Newport News.

Over 160 years later, our story carries forward: rising from fire, growing through seasons of change, and adapting in times of challenge. Today, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Melvin Wofford, Sr., First Baptist Church Denbigh remains rooted in legacy and committed to making a lasting, Christ-centered impact locally and globally.

What Grounds Us

Our shared values shape every ministry, guiding how we worship, serve, and grow as a Christ-centered community.

A Christ-centered, multi-generational service with congregational singing, Scripture reading, practical Bible teaching, and prayer. You’ll find a welcoming atmosphere, simple ways to connect, and time to meet others before and after the service.

Friendly hosts will assist you in finding parking, answer any questions you may have, and direct you to your seating area. Families can check their children into age-appropriate ministries. A Welcome Desk provides info about groups, serving, and upcoming events.

Just yourself. If you own a Bible, bring it; if not, we provide Scripture on screens and in print. Parents might bring any essentials their children need during childcare or kids’ classes.

Wear what’s comfortable. You’ll see everything from jeans to business attire. Our focus is on worshiping Jesus together, not matching a style. Come as you are; we’re glad you’re here.

Yes. We offer accessible entrances and seating, assistance as needed, and a secure kids check-in process. Trained volunteers and clear policies help create a safe, welcoming environment for all ages.

Visit the Welcome Desk after service, talk with a pastor or usher, or use our contact form. We’ll help you get connected through groups, serving opportunities, and upcoming events.
